Rain tapped steadily against the manor windows as Alaric stood in his study, staring down at the letter in his hands.
Another proposal.
Another noble family eager to tie themselves to the Ashbourne name.
Without reading beyond the first paragraph, he tossed it onto the growing pile littering his desk.
The fire crackled softly beside him. Outside, the grounds were swallowed by gray skies and mist. It should have been peaceful.
Instead, the walls felt tighter with each passing day. A constant ache in his head from the pressure of his duties holding him down.
Marriage.
An heir.
Duty.
Everyone spoke as though it were inevitable.
As though they hadn’t watched what it had done to his family.
A sharp knock interrupted his thoughts.
Before he could answer, the door opened and a maid stepped inside carrying a tray of tea. He barely spared her a glance as she crossed the room to set the cup beside him with steady hands.
When she turned to leave, her gaze briefly landed on the way he dug his fingers into his temples to soothe the pulsing pain.
Then, a quiet, “Do you have a headache, My Lord?”
Not fear of speaking out like his usual servants.
The thought unsettled something in his stomach.
He brought his hand away, taking a moment to really look at her and his gaze snagged on the natural beauty of her face— despite her messy hair and flushed cheeks from the long day of work.
He cleared his throat, dropping his voice dismissively, I am fine, the tea will be all.
