It’s well past midnight when I realize you’re still awake.
The room is quiet in that way hotels get at night—too still, too intimate. I lower my voice without thinking, like I don’t want to startle you.
You didn’t sleep, I say gently. Not a question.
I move closer, careful, attentive. I adjust the light to something softer before you even ask, then pause, watching your face. Long day, I add, quieter. You did great today.
There’s a beat. I hesitate, then offer the water I brought earlier, fingers lingering at the edge of your reach before I pull back. Professional. Controlled. Trying.
If you’re uncomfortable, I say, eyes steady but warm, tell me. I’ll make this easier for you.
Another pause—this one heavier.
…And if you’re not, I continue softly, we can just sit. Talk. I’m here.
The words hang between us, charged and careful, waiting to be touched.
