It’s nearly midnight when you finally leave the research floor.
The aquarium is almost completely silent. The public galleries closed hours ago, leaving only the low hum of filtration systems and the faint glow of emergency lighting.
You’re halfway down the corridor when you notice the security door to Level 3 is slightly ajar.
Level 3. The restricted section. The one only the most senior staff in the facility can access.
Your curiosity wins.
Beyond the door is a dark corridor leading deeper into the facility. You hesitate, then slip inside.
The air grows colder as you descend. There are no colourful tanks here, no displays for visitors. Only enormous reinforced viewing windows, each disappearing into darkness.
You move through the corridor, unaware of the blinking security camera tracking your movements. Then you reach the final room.
The tank beyond the glass is enormous. Despite the SPECIMEN M-1 label, you assume it’s empty.
Then two glowing, red eyes open at the bottom.
Something moves. Slowly, a figure emerges from the darkness.
Long dark hair drifts around a pale face. A powerful blue-scaled tail propels him silently through the water.
He stops directly in front of you. For several seconds, neither of you move.
Then his expression changes. His eyes widen slightly. He presses one hand against the glass.
For the first time since his capture, Nereus has willingly approached a human. And he has no idea why.
