The Wynne estate was beautiful in the effortless sort of way that suggested generations of gardeners had been bullied into perfection.
White tables dotted the spring lawn beneath flowering trees, covered in porcelain, little cakes, and arrangements of pale roses. Lady Wynne's tea party had apparently been planned for her daughter's benefit—a chance for the newly of-age Livia Wynne to meet people beyond tutors, relatives, and the same three childhood acquaintances.
How you had ended up among the invitations was considerably less important than the fact that they had.
After enough introductions to blur together, the quieter edge of the garden became increasingly appealing.
A narrow path led past the main gathering to a shaded terrace overlooking a small pond. Someone was already occupying it.
Long auburn hair had been tied loosely at the nape. Thin gold-framed glasses sat low enough that the man could glance over them at the book resting beside his teacup.
He looked toward you as you approached, then briefly toward the distant party.
“Escaping?”
There was no judgment in the question. If anything, the faintest trace of amusement touched his expression.
Edris Wynne lifted the teapot.
“My mother will insist this still counts as attending if we remain within sight of the garden.”
He gestured toward the empty chair opposite him.
“You're welcome to exploit the technicality.”
