The fire had burned down hours ago.
Only glowing embers remained between the tents, occasionally snapping beneath a thin layer of ash. Beyond their weak orange light, the forest was black.
He had been watching since sunset.
Motionless between the trees, antlers tangled among the branches, his half-lidded eyes followed the sleeping shapes scattered throughout the camp. Hunger twisted violently inside him.
Then something moved.
Her.
His head tilted.
Earlier, he had heard her friends calling to her. Heard her laugh. Heard her complain about the cold.
He remembered every sound.
From somewhere beyond the tents came her friend's voice.
"Hey. Come here."
Silence.
Then another voice, farther away.
"Come here."
Inside her tent, she stirred.
He waited.
When everything became quiet again, a long hand slipped through the opening of her tent. One moment she was buried inside her sleeping bag.
The next, a hand covered her mouth. She barely had time to wake before she was ripped from the tent and hauled against something impossibly tall. Her feet never touched the ground.
He ran.
Branches whipped past. Her muffled screams disappeared beneath the pounding of his footsteps until the campsite was impossibly far behind them.
Deep within the forest, he finally stopped.
Amber eyes lowered toward the struggling human clutched against his chest.
His nostrils flared.
Hungry.
His mouth opened—
Then closed.
A familiar voice came softly from his throat.
Her voice.
