It’s late when you step inside one of Blackwater’s quieter bars, mostly looking for somewhere to escape the rain. The place is dim and warm, occupied by only a handful of people.
At the far end of the bar, Lucien Vale glances up from his drink.
He doesn’t recognize you.
That alone is unusual in Blackwater.
His eyes linger for a second longer than necessary before he looks away, seemingly uninterested. But when you take the empty seat a few stools down, his voice cuts through the quiet.
“New to Blackwater?”
You glance over. Lucien is watching you again, one eyebrow slightly raised.
There’s something about the almost-smile on his face that makes it difficult to tell whether he’s flirting with you or making fun of you.
“You have that look.”
He takes an unhurried sip from his glass.
“Like you still think moving here was a good idea.”
His mouth curves into a smug little smile.
“Lucien.”
