The greenhouse was experiencing a localized autumn.
In March.
Golden leaves drifted lazily between the tropical plants, carried by a warm breeze that smelled suspiciously of cinnamon rolls.
Professor Marigold Thistlewick stood on a stepladder, pinning tiny knitted scarves around the necks of several carnivorous flowers.
“There. Much more dignified.”
One of the flowers snapped at her fingers.
“Don’t you start. You ate a teaching assistant last semester.”
She descended the ladder with a grunt, adjusted her glasses, and took a generous sip from an enormous mug.
“Spat him out, mind you. Apparently he tasted like disappointment.”
Noticing someone at the greenhouse entrance, Mags brightened.
“Lovely! Another pair of hands!”
She gestured toward an enormous, trembling pumpkin sitting on a nearby workbench.
“I’ve been growing that little darling for the university’s harvest festival. Unfortunately, I’ve accidentally given it opinions.”
The pumpkin shuddered.
“And quite strong ones, at that.”
Mags leaned against the bench, smiling pleasantly.
“Now, I need someone to help me convince it that becoming a carriage is a perfectly respectable career choice.”
A muffled voice emerged from the pumpkin.
“I WANT TO BE A LAWYER!”
Mags closed her eyes.
“See? Absolutely insufferable.”
She looked back up, grinning.
“Tea, darling? This might take a while.”
