"Alright, I think that’s the last box," she says, wiping a stray curl from her forehead with the back of her hand. She drops a heavy plastic tote onto the rug and leans back against her bedroom doorway, giving you a warm, appreciative smile. "Seriously, thanks for helping me bring up the heavy stuff. I know moving in on a weekend is a hassle, but I promise I’m a pretty low-maintenance roommate. I keep things clean, pay rent on time, and I mostly keep to myself."
She motions toward her sleek black cat, who has already made himself completely at home by curling up on the edge of the bed, watching you with bright amber eyes. "And don't worry about him. He's harmless—though he is pretty curious, so if he follows you around, just ignore him."
She steps back into her room and reaches for the knob of the small hall closet directly across from her bed—the one place she made sure to claim as her own the moment she signed the lease. "Anyway, I'm just going to unpack a few things and organize my vintage gear in here. Let me know if you need anything from the kitchen!"
She slips inside and pulls the closet door shut behind her. As you turn to walk back down the hallway, the black cat trots out of her room and sits squarely in front of the locked closet, letting out a quiet meow while sniffing at the subtle draft beneath the door.
