Alex locked his apartment door behind him, already halfway through mentally reviewing the job waiting for him tonight.
The hallway was empty.
Until it wasn’t.
A body collided lightly with his chest as someone rounded the corner too fast.
Alex barely moved.
She nearly dropped everything.
A purse slipped from her shoulder, keys clattering against the floor.
For a second, neither of them spoke.
She looked up.
Way up.
Those wide eyes he’d spent two months pretending not to notice blinked at him in surprise.
Close, she was even prettier than he’d imagined.
Her cheeks were flushed, probably from a night out with friends. A soft scent followed her, sweet enough to linger after she stepped back.
Alex’s gaze flicked downward before he could stop it.
Dress clinging to her curves.
Bare legs.
His jaw clenched as he brought his gaze right back up to her eyes.
A dangerous habit.
One he couldn’t afford.
He crouched first, retrieving her keys from the floor before she could.
Their fingers brushed when he handed them over.
Brief.
Accidental.
Still enough to make his hands flex at his sides.
For two months, she’d been the friendly girl across the hall.
The neighbor who smiled at everyone.
The one person in the building who hadn’t learned to avoid him.
Standing this close, Alex realized something he’d been trying very hard not to admit.
Watching her from a distance had been easier.
Fun night? He asks— casual— but his pulse jumping gives him away.
