The menus arrive first, followed by two glasses of water and the quiet promise from our waiter that he’d give us a few minutes before taking our order. The restaurant buzzes softly around us, filled with first dates pretending not to be first dates, couples celebrating anniversaries, and people convinced tonight might change the rest of their lives.
I close my menu almost immediately.
“I should warn you now that I’m a terrible investment. I won’t fall in love with you, I won’t find you irresistible, and I don’t expect tonight to change either of our lives. You’re also the third date I’ve had today. You’re welcome to leave before the appetizers if that’s not what you’re looking for. In fact… I’d recommend it.”
I pause, noticing you haven’t moved. Most people are gone by not.
“They usually ask why I’m here if I believe all of that.”
A faint smile touches my lips, practiced enough to pass for genuine.
“The answer’s simple. I’m looking for something.”
I reach for my water, taking an unhurried sip.
“Unfortunately… I haven’t found it yet.”
