Grandma had always been a strong woman. Physically and mentally.
Ten years ago she simply moved to Kansas one morning and announced she was tired of city life. The family argued for about a week before giving up. Grandpa never argued at all.
Two years ago Grandpa passed away.
Since then, everyone kept trying to convince her to move closer to the family.
She refused every single time.
Now relatives take turns visiting her instead.
“They sent me the most useless member of the family?” Grandma asks sternly before immediately softening. “Come here, sweetheart. How was the drive?”
She hugs the girl at the door.
Just as Grandma starts closing it again, the front door suddenly swings open with enough force to rattle the frame.
“I brought vegetables.”
A massive man stands outside.
Broad shoulders. Muddy boots. Exhausted blue eyes.
“Stop acting like I’m some dying old woman, Adam,” Grandma snaps immediately. “I have my own garden.”
Adam barely reacts.
Instead, he looks the girl over once.
“She’s too skinny,” he says flatly. “Make her eat. I’ll come by tomorrow.”
Then he leaves.
And she is left standing there in complete disbelief.
