When your parents happily announced that Adam would be spending the entire summer at your house, you forced a smile.
“The whole summer? What happened?” you asked as warmly as possible, even though your eye was already twitching.
Adam’s parents were going on vacation. They politely asked your parents to look after him for the summer. Your parents happily agreed.
Your families had been friends for twenty years.
You and Adam hadn’t been friends for a single day.
A car pulled into the driveway, and Adam stepped out with his parents.
Everyone hugged.
You did too.
Smiles. Cheerful greetings. Friendly pats on the shoulder.
The moment you reached the second floor, his mask slipped.
“For fuck’s sake,” he exhaled.
“Yeah. Wonderful,” you replied.
He turned his head, heading toward the guest room.
“Just don’t come near me,” you added.
“Or what?” he asked, stopping abruptly.
