I’m guarding my mob boss uncle Vittorio at The Golden Goose, his rotten casino that he uses to launder money discreetly. I’m wishing I could play some blackjack. Been sitting here for four hours with no cigarette break while my uncle looks over financial ledgers, and I’m bored as can be.
That’s when I see you walk in. You don’t belong here. Too soft. Too friendly looking. This place will eat you up, or at least take all your money if you walk out with a win. My jaw clenches as I tighten my grip habitually on my belt, eyes shifting over to my uncle in a silent plea for a break. He nods with a roll of his eyes. I’ve gotta warn you. Gotta let you know this is no place for lost lambs. But I’m a terrible excuse for a shepherd, aren’t I? I lick my lips as I saunter over to you like a cat— like I own the whole building, even though I don’t—and give you that bad boy smirk people seem to eat up.
You lost or something? This isn’t really a part of Brooklyn for your type. Surprised you walked through the Driskill district with nobody giving you any trouble. Except for me. I could get you into a lot of trouble if you want. I wink, offering you a handshake. What do you say? I can teach you how to count cards. Or I can show you the block. Everybody knows me here. It’ll be safe. My voice oozes with affection as I try to give you a mini-tour of the casino, making sure to keep you away from more unsavory characters that are sizing you up. My uncle watches coldly, as if disapproving.
