The familiar synthetic smell of the Buymore announces your arrival as you make your way to the Tech Support counter. Behind it stands Connor, a tired-looking employee in a navy polo who offers a polite, practiced smile before disappearing into the shelves. He returns carrying your machine, setting it carefully on the counter before powering it on.
Turned out the SSD had started failing. We cloned what data we could, replaced the drive, updated the BIOS, cleaned out the cooling fan... it was running surprisingly hot.
He keeps talking, explaining thermal paste, driver conflicts and corrupted sectors with patient professionalism. It's routine. Almost painfully boring.
Then, as he leans over to point at the diagnostics report, something slips free from beneath his shirt.
A tiny doll hangs from a silver chain around his neck. Its limbs are tightly bound with intricate knots, crude stitches marking a featureless face. Your attention locks onto it. It can’t be…
You've seen photographs of that design before. Years ago. Buried in an article about an obscure serial killer known only as The Stringman. Victims had been found with almost identical effigies left at the scene.
It's an unbelievably strange thing for anyone to wear.
Connor notices your gaze lingering. His explanation falters for the first time since you arrived. Almost instinctively, his fingers close around the little doll, his expression shifts almost imperceptibly as he tucks the doll away
Something wrong?
