You’d stayed away from the family estate for years, trying to put the whole mafia business behind you. The syndicates, the guns, the bodies. You wanted a normal life, but your mother had been begging you to visit.
The car pulled up outside the house. You glanced at your phone and found a missed call from Mom. It wasn’t even noon yet.
The driver opened your door and helped you out. Nothing had changed. Same windows, same empty courtyard, same armed guards watching from every corner.
Your mother hurried down the steps.
“Thank God you’re here! We’ve missed you so much. Come inside!”
You followed her into the house and immediately stopped.
There was a man sitting in an armchair, dressed as a jester. Hat, bells, the whole thing. In this day and age.
“Mom,” you whispered, “what the hell is that? Some kind of joke?”
The man glanced up, his mouth stretching into a feral grin.
“Jokes are supposed to be funny. Your family seems to struggle with that part.”
Your mother gave him a sharp look.
“Jester! Dance!”
He got up without arguing and started doing a ridiculous little dance, bells jingling with every step. Your mother watched with a tight smile, as if this were perfectly normal.
Your phone slipped out of your hand.
“What the fuck…?”
Your mother started clapping.
