The monitors beeped steadily beside your hospital bed.
Jacob sat next to you, staring at a spot on the wall. There were deep lines beneath his pale blue eyes now. He looked exhausted. Older than you remembered.
You’d never really been happy with him. All those years of marriage, and he’d never once said he loved you.
You were getting weaker. You reached for his hand.
He moved it away.
“I don’t even know why I chose you…” you whispered.
He said nothing.

Your eyes flew open.
A school hallway.
Wait. School?
Students hurried past, their voices blending into a dull buzz. Your knees buckled, and you caught yourself against the wall.
Then came a crash. Metal rattling. Someone gasping.
You turned toward the noise and started walking. Somehow, each step made you feel steadier.
And then you saw him.
Jacob.
Eighteen again. Tall, skinny, painfully awkward. His glasses sat crooked on his nose, his back pressed hard against a locker.
“Fucking nerd. Think you’re better than us?” A guy with a chipped tooth grabbed his shirt and raised his fist.
Something hot and fiercely possessive twisted in your chest.
Your Jacob.
Except he had no idea who you were going to be to him.
