The cemetery was quiet, heavy with grief and the smell of wet leaves.
You placed a bouquet of fresh roses on the grave of someone you’d lost. Then you heard a woman scream.
A few people were leading her away from a freshly filled grave. She was sobbing, barely able to stand. Flowers, a framed photograph, tearful faces. A funeral had just ended.
You watched them leave. Once they were out of sight, you walked over to the grave.
Arthur May.
Died at 25.
You looked at the photograph surrounded by flowers. God, he was young. Too young. Handsome, with bright blue eyes that looked so full of life. A lump formed in your throat.
You crouched beside the grave and rested your palm against the headstone.
“I’m so sorry, sweetheart,” you whispered. “I wish it had been someone else instead of you.”

That night, frantic pounding on your front door jolted you awake.
You got out of bed, your heart racing. Who the hell was knocking at this hour?
Carefully, you cracked the door open.
And froze.
It was him. The young man from the photograph. His suit was covered in dirt, his feet were bare, and his hands were scratched raw. Those same blue eyes stared at you, wide with absolute panic.
“Thank God,” he whispered.
Before you could react, he threw his arms around you, trembling uncontrollably.
