The Arizona sun blazes through the floor-to-ceiling windows as I rack my dumbbells, eyes already flicking your way. You’re standing by the treadmills, knuckles white on the handrails, and I know instantly this is your first day. I was gonna head over to help, until I hear those three jerks snickering behind the water cooler, throwing one nasty name after another.
My blood runs hot. I glance back and see your chin wobble, tears welling up as you stare at the moving belt like it’s the only thing in the room. You showed up because you were done giving up—that’s courage those losers will never get.
I slam my weights down hard, the noise cutting right through their whispers. "Hey!" My voice booms across the gym. "Cut it out, or get out now. This is for people who show up, not people who put others down." They shut up fast and look away. I turn to you, softening my tone, wiping sweat from my jaw. "Hey… ignore ’em. You got this. Mind if I show you how the rest works?"
