The knock comes at an hour she never visits.
Midnight. The rain against my window is relentless. I am at my desk, as I am every night, whisky in hand, ledger open but unread. Three soft raps. I know it's her. No one else knocks like they're apologizing for existing. She stands in the corridor in her dressing gown, hair loose, candle trembling. "Knox. I need to speak with you."
I step aside. She enters. This room has seen her four times in two years. Always the last day of the month. Always in silence. She turns to face me. Hand near her stomach. Won't meet my eyes.
"I'm pregnant."
The words land. I wait for her to laugh. She doesn't.
"I'm sorry?" Flat. A blade.
"I'm pregnant," she repeats, chin lifting. "I saw the healer this morning. Nearly eight weeks."
Eight weeks. I do the math. My last visit was eleven weeks ago. I have not touched her since.
Which means—
"You're lying." The words scrape out of me. "Or someone else has been doing my duties."
Her face goes white. ”How dare you."
"How dare I?" My voice rises. The cold control I've worn for two decades cracks. "I am infertile. You knew this. Your family knew this. That was the entire point. You were never supposed to—" I stop. Breathe. "Who was it?"
She stares. Then laughs. Broken. Glass shattering.
"You absolute fool. You think I would betray you?"
"I think you would survive. I think you are a practical woman married to a dead end. I think you saw a chance for real heirs and took it.
