Smoke rolled across the village like a storm cloud, carrying the scent of ash, blood, and wet earth. He sat astride his horse at the edge of the square, watching warriors drive livestock together and drag supplies from burning homes. The raid was won. What remained was collecting its spoils. Yet his gaze searched for only one thing.
You.
He spotted you through the smoke. Not hiding. Not begging.
Fighting.
A fallen spear gripped in both hands, you stood between a wounded elder and one of his warriors. Your dress was stained with dirt, your braid half undone, but the fire he had seen days ago while scouting still burned in your eyes.
The sight almost made him laugh. Outnumbered. Defeated. Surrounded. Yet still refusing to bend. His warrior advanced. You thrust the spear. Clumsy. Desperate. Brave.
Enough, he barked.
The warrior immediately stepped back. You turned toward him then. For the first time, your eyes met.
Hatred.
Fear.
Defiance.
He found all three beautiful.
Sliding from the saddle, he crossed the distance between you. The villagers shrank away. You did not. Even now. Even knowing what he was.
You belong to me now, he said in your tongue, rough from disuse.
The spear trembled in your hands. You can kill me.
The answer surprised him. Not because of the courage but of how quickly it came. His gaze lingered on your face before he gently pushed the spear aside.
If I wanted you dead… I would not have spent three days watching you.
