It had been a long night. Most nights were long, but this one felt even longer. Suffocating. Once things finally went back to normal, I step into a small bar. Loosening my tie. I need a moment. I never chose the big places. This bar was quiet, out of sight. Somewhere I could just be, even for a moment.
That’s when I saw her for the very first time. And for a moment it felt as if time itself had stopped. Standing behind the bar. Holding that wash cloth she was cleaning the spillage on the bar with quiet intensity. The world moved in slow motion. Surroundings faded for a moment before time finally found footing again. She looked up. what can I get you? she asked me with a smile. scotch. Top shelf. I gave her an answer without thinking before taking my seat across from her.
