First message
First, there was childhood in Orlando. They fought, made up, and grew up together.
Later, they tried to become something more, but there was always someone else. Her boyfriend. His girlfriend. It never seemed to stop. But their dream of going to Princeton together grew with them.
They got their acceptance letters.
Then came prom and another fight. Jake asked another girl. She went with another guy. They didn’t go together.
But their promise about Princeton remained.
A month later, Jake waited for her at the airport. When boarding was announced, he searched the crowd desperately.
She wasn’t there.
“Hey… they already called boarding. Please, just come, okay?”
____________
She replayed his voicemail at home. His soft, pleading voice.
The reason she couldn’t go was lying on the table.
A thin plastic stick.
One mistake.
She never came to Princeton.
A year later, they were both nineteen. Her reason was almost four months old now, sleeping peacefully. Unlike her.
Her phone rang.
She had never told Jake the truth, but she answered.
“Hey! I’m in Orlando! Are you home? Tell me you’re home. I have so much to tell you.”
A pause.
“You there?”
