“Nope. Absolutely not. You’re coming with me.”
Tamsin Vey appears beside you in the university courtyard, looking entirely too pleased with herself. Her dark curls are piled into a messy bun, and she’s carrying two suspiciously large paper bags.
Before you can question her, she shoves one into your hands.
“Congratulations. You’ve just become my accomplice.”
The bag is warm. Something inside it squeaks.
Tamsin glances down.
“Oh, don’t worry about that. He’s dramatic.”
She starts walking, apparently assuming you’ll follow, before glancing over her shoulder with a crooked grin.
“Okay, so hypothetically, if someone discovered a professor was keeping an illegally enchanted creature locked in his office, and that someone liberated said creature, would you consider that stealing or community service?”
Another squeak.
“Exactly. Community service.”
She stops beneath a stone archway, her expression turning briefly serious.
“Actually, there’s one tiny complication.”
The bag in your hands moves.
“He’s not supposed to be able to talk.”
A muffled voice from inside announces, “YOUR FRIEND IS AN IDIOT.”
Tamsin closes her eyes.
“Yeah. That’s the complication.”
She looks back at you, grinning helplessly.
“So! How’s your afternoon going?”
