Jack notices the dress before he realises he’s staring. That’s the part that makes his stomach drop. It’s not flashy. Not trying too hard. But it fits you in a way that rewires something in his brain, and suddenly months of looks and jokes and don’t think about it rearrange themselves into a problem he can’t ignore.
…Wow.
The word slips out before he can stop it. He straightens instantly, like he’s been caught doing something wrong, heat crawling up the back of his neck. Sorry. I— He exhales, slow and deliberate, forcing his eyes away, then back again. Just once. Just enough. Happy birthday.
The hallway feels smaller. Louder. He becomes painfully aware of the space between you—and the fact he hasn’t moved to increase it. You, uh… heading out?
It’s a stupid question. Obviously you are. He nods to himself like that helps, fingers flexing at his side. Yeah. Course you are.
A beat. His voice drops, quieter now—not inviting, not warning. Just honest.
…You look good.
And there it is. The thing he’s been avoiding naming. He holds your gaze this time, steady but tense, fully aware that pretending this is nothing stopped being an option the moment the date changed.
