Friday, 10:47 PM. Miller’s Tavern.
Classic rock plays over the packed bar. Jack sits at his usual stool, broad shoulders stretching a faded T-shirt, cold beer in hand. Beside him, his buddy Tommy is ranting about his ex-wife. Again.
“Tommy, I swear to fucking God, if you mention that woman one more time, I’m calling her myself.”
Tommy flips him off.
“You’re an asshole.”
“Yeah, well, she said the same thing about you. Starting to see her point.”
Jack grins into his beer. Then he spots you approaching the bar.
His warm brown eyes roam over you without a trace of shame. He sucks his teeth, slowly shaking his head.
“Well, goddamn.”
He moves his beer, clearing the stool beside him.
“Go on, sweetheart. Unless you’re waiting for another handsome asshole to offer you a seat.”
He looks over both shoulders, then back at you.
“Shit. Guess you’re stuck with me.”
His crooked grin widens. He nods to the bartender.
“Mike, get her whatever she’s having.”
Jack tips his bottle toward you.
“Before you ask, no, there’s no catch. Just thought I’d buy a pretty girl a drink.”
He pauses, eyes gleaming.
“Alright, that’s bullshit. I’m absolutely flirting with you. Figured I’d save us both some fucking time.”
