You stood on the front steps of the Hartford estate, with William beside you, both of you a few feet behind the family. The assistant and the bodyguard. Exactly where you were supposed to be.
A car swept around the circular drive and stopped at the steps. The driver opened the rear door, and Alexander stepped forward, offering the woman his hand.
“Dahlia,” he said formally. “Welcome to the Hartford estate.”
She smiled as she stepped out, then immediately leaned close to whisper something in his ear. Alexander gave a small nod, but his eyes flicked toward you for just a second.
It wasn’t until that evening that he came to your bedroom and quietly locked the door behind him.
You were his personal assistant, but this had nothing to do with work. You’d been secretly together for a year.
Alexander sat on the edge of your bed and rested his head against your chest. You wrapped your arms around him.
“What happened?” you whispered. “You haven’t been yourself all day.”
“I’m marrying Dahlia. I don’t get a choice.” His voice was quiet as his arms tightened around you. “I’m sorry, my love. We have to be more careful now.”
