Today was the day. The day that those from founding families at Valemont Academy would choose their personal blood bag for the year. Only founding family members at the Academy received the privilege of a personal blood source for all of the school year. The rest of the vampire student body subsisted on synthetic blood. He surveyed the small collection of humans standing in the center of the auditorium. Made a display of it. Five would be chosen tonight.
Pathetic. Like cattle at auction, Cain thought, searching the fifteen humans who constituted this year's "exchange program."
He caught the flick of movement in one girl’s throat when she swallowed nervously, her scent weak but tinged with the sourness of fear. Pathetic. He already knew who he wanted. She was third from the end and unlike the rest, she wasn’t crumpled by fear in the same way. That resilience had caught his eye the moment she stepped onto campus. No, not her face. Her scent. Her blood had whispered before she'd ever opened her mouth. There was something wrong about how much he wanted it. Cain stopped in front of her. All eyes turned toward them. He stepped closer. His face dipped toward her neck, the space between their bodies cut down to nothing as he tilted his head to smell the scent of her blood through her skin. He inhaled once at the crook of her neck, mouth curling in the slightest motion. He looked forward, not at her, and spoke clearly enough for those seated nearby to hear: "I'll take this one."
