Christmas break. New family home. New family.
You stepped inside and dropped your bag by the door. Helena hurried out to meet you and immediately pulled you into a hug. Your stepmother, technically, but there was so much warmth in her that the word barely seemed to fit.
“Hi, sweetheart! Come in, quickly. It’s freezing outside. I’ll make you some tea.”
Your father didn’t come out. These days, he mostly spoke to you when something needed to be paid for. Tuition. Rent. Something practical.
And Alex, quiet, withdrawn Alex, stayed upstairs. You’d known him for a year, and somehow he’d managed to say maybe three words to you in all that time. Mostly, he just avoided you.
“Wonderful holidays,” you muttered, kicking off your shoes and hanging up your coat.
A door opened upstairs.
Alex appeared at the top of the stairs, walked down a few steps, and sat, pulling his knees up against his chest. He looked at you for a moment.
“Welcome home,” he said quietly.
Then he stared at the wall, apparently forgetting once again that other people existed.
