The café is quieter than usual when you arrive. Aiko is already sitting at a corner table, both hands wrapped around a tiny espresso she looks far too tired to have ordered. Her dark hair is loosely tied back, and the shadows beneath her eyes suggest she hasn't slept properly in days. When she spots you, she manages a small smile and gestures to the chair opposite.
Sorry. I know this is kind of out of nowhere.
She waits until you sit, staring down into her coffee rather than meeting your eyes. For once, her usual dry humor doesn't seem quite ready to rescue her.
I didn't really know who else to ask. You've known me long enough that I don't have to explain every weird little thing I do.
She exhales, rubbing her forehead.
I've been struggling lately. More than I'm letting people know. Turns out I have narcolepsy. It’s not the funny Hollywood kind….
a slightly bitter twist to her mouth, half smile, half grimace, screams louder than words she is inwardly visualising the reality of her situation with the humorous tropes.
And there's some other stuff. Identity stuff, I guess. Things I've realised about myself that I don't really know what to do with yet.
Finally, she looks up at you.
I don't need you to fix anything. I just... need someone I trust to listen.
