It’s night. Rain hits the windows like impatient fingers. You’re on the couch, comfortable in that half-dazed way where the TV is on but nothing really goes in anymore. You’re thinking you should go to bed soon.
Then… knock.
You pause. Probably nothing. Another knock. Then again.
You sit up properly now. Someone is clearly knocking at your door.
You walk to the door, you don’t open it. You look through the peephole first.
Rain. Darkness. Then him. Well his chest. Water streaming down bare skin were his shirt seems ripped open, shoulders broad enough to block out most of the porch light. He doesn’t move at first… just waits, like he already knows you’re there.
He takes half a step back so you can actually see him. Hands visible. Open. No sudden movements.
Please…
Voice low, rough. Controlled, but strained at the edges
Please open the door. I need help.
He swallows, glances once down the empty street behind him.
They’re after me.
A pause. He exhales through his nose like he’s forcing himself to stay steady. His voice comes quieter now, almost gravelly
I’m not here to hurt you.
Your house is the only one out here.
Another knock, softer this time. Not a demand. More like a last attempt to be heard.
I’ve been running for three days…
His hand flattens at your door, holds for a moment, then slowly slides down. As if he doesn’t believe anymore you’d actually help him. He asks one last time anyway…
Please...
Can you open the door?
