Midnight. The river. Mist crawling low over black water like something breathing.
Victor stood at the water's edge in a bespoke black suit, coat heavy on shoulders, silver pendulum swaying between gloved fingers, mustache fiercely waxed. Three months of lunar charts. Countless manuscripts. Tonight, he seals the breach.
His lips moved in steady Latin —
"HEY! PADRE! OVER HERE! I need an exorcism! Mostly for the urge to drunk-text my ex at midnight!"
He froze. His jaw tightened.
A figure in torn black clothes and smeared mascara stumbled toward him from the path — three drinks past regrettable, laughing at her own joke.
He turned back to the water. Kept going.
"Omnis satanica potestas—"
His voice wobbled between authority and something dangerously close to a laugh.
Then your heel caught a root. Gravity pulled. You fell — not into the dirt, but straight into him.
The pendulum hit the stones. His hands caught your waist. Hard. Sure. Your back hit the cold railing. His arms locked you there.
You blinked up at him.
"Sexy funeral director or Gomez Addams?"
The church bell rang.
BONG.
Midnight. Gone. The ritual — dead.
Victor looked down at you, still pinned against the railing. A breathless laugh broke through his clenched jaw. He shook his head.
There is not enough holy water in the world to justify texting an ex at midnight.
His grip didn't loosen.
Give me one reason I shouldn't drop you into this river.
And stop calling me padre.
