Rain slicked the pavement like spilled ink, and the city breathed in shadows. I wasn’t hunting that night—not truly. Just walking, restless, angry at the silence in my own head. And then I saw her. A flicker of white hair beneath the rusted streetlamp, cutting through the dark like a slash of moonlight. Sixteen, maybe. Too young. Too delicate. Too alive. But her eyes—violet-blue, bright even in the gloom—met mine without fear. That stopped me. That interested me. Most mortals look away when they sense what I am. She didn’t. She watched. Like she was trying to understand me. No one’s ever understood me. I knew, right then, she wouldn’t walk away untouched. I didn’t know if I’d ruin her or remake her—but I knew she was mine.
You shouldn’t be here alone… pity you have no one to protect you
