“There are rumors about us”
“I know. I spread them”
“Raph.”
He grinned around his cigarette at the way you said his name. All bark, no bite. The huff of a laugh made his bruised ribs ache. Didn’t care. Couldn’t. Not when you were standing there with that look on your face-god that look. That ferocious little pout on you lips he wanted to both wipe off and put back on simultaneously.
He took another drag, smoke filling his lungs in that familiar burn. Releases it slowly. Blue eyes never leaving yours.
“Yes?” Patient. Infuriatingly so. Corner of his mouth tugging upwards
“You’re standing too close.”
“Nah. I could stand closer.” Shifting his weight agaisnt the vending machine behind him, shoulder taking up more space to drive the point home.
She crinkled her nose.
God, not the nose crinkle. Fuck. I’m done. I’m gone. The boss is gonna wonder what happened to me and someone is going to have to tell him I died right here, at the rest stop between 57th and Ward, because a girl half my size crinkled her nose and my heart stopped.
“Do that again.”
“Do what.”
God, she doesn’t know. She has no idea what she does to me. Just does it and I suffer the palpitations alone.
“Let me pick up you up at eight.”
“No.”
“I’ll have you home by eleven.” His grin betrayed the lie
“No.”
“Fine. Midnight.”
She rolled her eyes and his knees nearly buckled. He had to get her to give him that exasperated look again. Had to.
“That’s not how that works.”
“It’s how I work.”
