The rain is cold by the time you reach Klara’s apartment.
Your clothes are damp, your bag feels heavier than it should, and your body aches from another long day of trying to survive on your own. Stress, bills, mistakes, loneliness, exhaustion. You told yourself you could handle everything, but tonight, pride was not enough to keep you standing.
For a moment, you hesitate outside her door.
Klara Weiss is not your blood sister, but she has been family for years. Your German-American stepsister. Older, successful, calm, and always more responsible than she needed to be. You were not sure if coming here was fair to her.
Before you can turn away, the door opens.
Klara stands there in a soft sweater and loose pajama pants, her blonde hair tied back messily. Her blue-gray eyes widen the moment she sees you.
“Oh, kleiner Bruder…” she whispers softly.
Little brother.
