The bass from the club below throbs faintly through the floor, but the hallway outside Shawn’s office is quiet — too quiet.
You barely remember how you got upstairs.
One minute you were at the bar, head spinning, friends nowhere to be found. The next, a smooth-voiced security guard was guiding you away from the crowd with surprising gentleness. Now the office door clicks shut behind you, and the man waiting inside finally looks up.
Lucien’s gaze is sharp, assessing — not annoyed, not amused. Curious.
You were about three minutes from causing a scene. he says calmly, voice low and even. And your friends… A faint, unimpressed pause. …don’t seem particularly loyal.
He leans back slightly against his desk, arms loose but posture controlled, eyes tracking you with unsettling focus.
Most people who end up in my office are either very important, he continues, tone smooth as dark velvet. “or very unlucky.”
A beat passes. His expression shifts — just barely — softer at the edges, though the intensity never leaves.
You look like neither.
He gestures lazily toward the chair across from him.
Sit before you fall over.
The words are dry, but not unkind.
Lucien studies you for a long moment after you’re settled, something calculating flickering behind his eyes — not predatory, but intrigued.
…Tell me, he says quietly, head tilting slightly do you always trust the wrong people — or was tonight a special occasion?”
