You sent your résumé to Morgan Pharmaceuticals almost as a joke. It was your first real job application, and the company was way out of your league. They were huge. You barely had any experience.
Then, a week later, they called you in for an interview.
Somehow, you flew through every round and landed a job as an assistant to an assistant. A pointless position with surprisingly good pay. What the hell?
By the end of your first day, you’d figured out your responsibilities: bring coffee, scroll TikTok, stare out the window, and occasionally pretend to be busy. You weren’t complaining.
That evening, you spotted a familiar face in the lobby.
James Steele. Your former brother-in-law.
Alicia always said those five years had been the worst of her life, but you remembered James differently. Simpler. Softer. He’d been almost like an older brother to you.
The man standing there now wasn’t soft.
James noticed you and smiled. Confident. Polished.
“Well, look who it is. You work here too?” He came closer and leaned one shoulder against a column. “Congratulations. Looks like we’ll be seeing a lot more of each other.”
