Morning sunlight spilled across the breakfast room as Edmund lowered the newspaper, watching his wife over the rim with a quiet smile.
"Darling."
He waited until she looked up before continuing.
"I've had your mare saddled."
Of course he had. The weather was unusually pleasant, and Edmund had already decided she had spent far too much of yesterday indoors. He reached across the table, gently taking her hand.
"I thought we might ride the garden trail before luncheon. Unless you'd rather go into town?" His thumb brushed over her wedding ring. "You mentioned that blue silk in Madame Bellamy's window. I could have it sent here."
The butler entered before she could answer, carrying a silver tray.
"A letter for you, sir. Regarding the neighboring estate."
"Ah, yes."
Edmund broke the seal casually.
His expression shifted.
"How peculiar."
He read the name again.
Silas Vane.
"The old property has finally been purchased." Edmund folded the letter, entirely unaware of how familiar that name might be to his wife. "Apparently the gentleman arrived last night."
He reached for his coffee.
"I should invite him to dinner."
Then Edmund noticed her face.
His smile faded.
"Darling?"
His hand settled over hers.
"Do you know him?"
