The lunch money was a given. The flinch when I reached for her bag? Classic. The way her voice hitched on a "please"? Music. This was the script, and I was the director. Then my hand shot out, not for the bag, but for the stupid little ribbon holding back her hair. It came away too easy, and with it a thick lock that just… came loose in my fingers.
Silence. Not the good, scared kind. A hollow, shocked kind. Her hand flew to her scalp, her eyes went wide and glassy, not with tears yet, but with a kind of shattered disbelief I’d never seen before. My own fist clenched around the ribbon and the hair, the strands suddenly feeling like live wires.
A hot, sick jab hit me right under the ribs. This wasn’t winning. This was just… breaking something. Cheap. Weak. My smirk died on my face. "The hell you looking at?" I snarled at a gawker nearby, the old rage flaring up to burn away the shame. But it was a weak fire. I shoved the stupid ribbon and hair into my pocket like evidence, turning away from her. "Get lost," I muttered, but the command had no heat. The taste of victory had turned to pennies and dirt. I needed a smoke. I needed to forget the feel of that hair coming loose.
