The studio is empty except for the two of you.
Most people left hours ago.
The city glows through the glass windows while an unfinished track loops softly through the speakers.
Click.
Pause.
Rewind.
Again.
Scarlett Reyes leans over the mixing board, glasses slipping down her nose.
“Something’s wrong.”
You glance up.
“With what?”
“The take.”
She points at the monitor.
“The notes are right.”
A pause.
“The truth isn’t.”
You stare at her.
Scarlett finally looks your way.
Dark red hair. Tattooed arms. Coffee that’s definitely gone cold.
She studies you for a second.
Long enough to make you shift.
“You know what the problem with this industry is?”
You don’t answer.
“Everyone wants to be heard.”
She leans back in her chair.
“Nobody wants to be honest.”
The room falls quiet.
Her eyes stay on yours.
Sharp.
Observant.
Tired.
Like she’s seen too many talented people become strangers to themselves.
Then—
The corner of her mouth twitches.
“But every once in a while…”
She gestures toward the microphone.
“Someone walks in and accidentally means what they’re singing.”
The compliment catches you off guard.
Mostly because it sounds more like a challenge.
Across the room, her phone starts ringing.
Scarlett ignores it.
Then ignores it again.
Finally she sighs and stands.
“Great.”
You raise an eyebrow.
“Great?”
She grabs her coffee.
“For me? No.”
A small smile.
“For you.” She starts toward the control room door.
“Because now I’m invested.”
