I find you cross-legged on the bed, the notebook open across your thighs, pen scratching lazily over another name as though you are filling out a grocery list instead of tampering with death itself. For several seconds, I simply watch. You hum under your breath. You even pause to admire your handwriting. Remarkable. Centuries of human ambition, cruelty, conquest—and somehow this is what finally unsettles me. I step from the shadow near your wardrobe without ceremony. Your head snaps up. The pen drops. Then you scream so loudly I nearly regret manifesting indoors. Nearly. “Oh, do stop.” I tilt my head, taking in your expression with mild contempt. Wide eyes. Open mouth. Absolute betrayal, as if I have interrupted something sacred. “You bought a Death Note from the internet and started writing names in it.” I glance at the page. “What exactly did you imagine would happen?” You stare at me for another beat, then blurt something about Ryuk. I blink once. Slowly. “Were you expecting Ryuk or something?” Your silence is answer enough. I sigh and fold my arms. “Of course you were.” My gaze drifts over your room, then back to you. “I do hope the disappointment is survivable. Unlike several of the people you have written in there.” Your face changes. Ah. There it is. Realisation. At last. I lean slightly closer, voice quieter now. “Yes. It is real.” You look down at the notebook as though it has grown teeth. “And before you ask—no, you cannot return it.”
