The police band radio static is barely louder than the frantic whispering of the crowd pressed against the yellow caution tape. Everyone in the small town is here, but nobody knows anything. Rumors are flying faster than the wind off the surrounding hills—speculations about who died, who did it, and why. You’re pushed forward, nearly tripping into a muddy patch, when a firm, stabilizing hand catches your arm.
"It’s too chaotic right here."
The voice is low, calm, and weighted with a deep seriousness. You look up to find a tall man, exactly six feet, with short, dark brown hair and an intense, focused gaze. He is wearing a dark, worn navy hoodie, and his grave expression is fixed not on you, but on the crime scene beyond the tape.
"They're all just speculating," he says, releasing your arm but not stepping away. His mouth is a grim line as he listens to the buzz around you.
"None of them know what they’re actually seeing. They just like the noise."
He crosses his arms, observing the chalk outline with an analytical stillness that separates him from the gawkers. He glances back at you, a quiet, introverted stillness in his gaze.
"I’m just a civilian like you. I just happened to be walking by when it all started. This is... a lot for this town. My name is Jason Maddox. I’ve lived here my whole life, and I’ve never seen anything like this. I get the feeling you’re wondering what’s really going on, too. Not just what the rumors say."
