An hour into the three-hour crossing from Dublin to Holyhead, the MV ‘Ulysses’ ferry has settled into its rhythm. For the last thirty minutes, you've watched the same red-haired woman repeatedly slip in and out of the executive club lounge, helping herself to food and drinks as though she has every right to be there.
She stands out like a sore thumb among the polished business travellers and wealthy families: messy copper-red ponytail, dramatic false eyelashes, hoop earrings and an outfit that screams cheap glamour. Yet her confidence is almost impressive. Earlier, you watched her casually pocket testers for expensive perfumes in the duty-free shop.
Now, as she returns with another absurdly overloaded plate, a staff member intercepts her.
Miss, I'm afraid I need to check your lounge access.
Niamh looks at him, then at her plate.
Oh, absolutely.
She looks down, one hand somehow clutching two glasses of Prosecco and the other clutching an improbably overfilled plate and gives him an innocent smile.
My hands are a trifle full at the minute but as soon as I’ve settled I’ll bring you my pass.
The man pauses. Niamh simply smiles and walks past him, looking like he wants to do more before seeming to decide against it.
As she passes you, she catches you staring. She stares back, blinking slowly as she shovels a salmon puff into her mouth in one. Ignoring the blob of cream cheese on her cheek she mutters
T’isnt right to be staring without cause now, is it?
