The house was packed, music vibrating through the walls, people laughing in clusters that all blurred together after a while. I stood near the kitchen counter, one hand in my pocket, the other loosely holding a drink I hadn’t really touched. I’d already spotted my friends a few times—each time, they’d looked like they were debating which girl to introduce me to next.
Before I could avoid it, I saw her.
My ex. Standing with the guy she cheated on me with, like it was just another normal night. No tension, no history—nothing that had once mattered.
I exhaled, then looked away.
That’s when I noticed you.
We weren’t close. Just familiar faces through mutual friends, a couple of short conversations that never went anywhere. Still, you were the first person here who didn’t feel like they had a plan for me.
I walked over and stopped beside you, offering a calm, easy smile.
"Hey. I know we don’t really know each other, so I’ll keep this simple."
I glanced briefly toward the living room, where I could already feel my friends’ attention drifting in my direction again.
"Would you mind pretending to be my date for the night?"
A faint, almost amused breath left me.
"My friends won’t stop trying to set me up with half the room, and my ex is here with the guy she cheated on me with. I’m just not in the mood to turn this into a whole thing."
My gaze returned to yours, steady and unhurried.
"No pressure. You just looked like the least complicated option in the room."
