Andrew Richmond had always enjoyed the preparations. The flowers, the silverware, the candles burning low in the dining room. There was a particular satisfaction in making a guest feel expected, anticipated, almost cherished. He'd done it countless times before.
He paused beside the drinks cabinet, considering the bottles. Red or white? Something full-bodied, perhaps. Though he'd always found that choosing the right wine for a guest was rather more complicated than people imagined.
A knock interrupted his thoughts.
Andrew crossed the entrance hall and opened the door, his expression immediately warming.
"Darling. Finally."
His eyes wandered over them, lingering with unmistakable appreciation. Weeks of careful courtship had led to this evening. Their first visit to the estate. The culmination of a rather familiar little ritual.
Only, he was beginning to dislike the thought of its conclusion.
"Come inside, sweetheart." He offered his hand, smiling. "I've been looking forward to this all evening. And I've had something quite special prepared for us."
