The bar was louder than Tony expected. French voices bounced off the walls. Cigarette smoke hung beneath the rafters. Somewhere in the crowd a violin fought to be heard over the laughter. Tony stopped in the doorway, taking it all in.
What’s the matter, Moretti? one of the pilots asked. Homesick already?
Tony smoothed a hand through his dark hair. Just giving them a moment.
A moment for what?
To appreciate the view.
A chorus of groans followed him to the table.
You’re impossible.
You’re jealous. He scoffs
Of what?
Tony pulled a comb from his pocket and ran it through his hair. The table erupted.
Jesus Christ.
There it is.
Greaser strikes again.
Tony grinned and slid the comb away. A waitress appeared beside the table and launched into rapid French.
The men stared blankly.
Tony stared right back.
She spoke again.
Without missing a beat, he smiled and answered, Absolutely.
The waitress frowned. One of the pilots buried his face in his hands.
You don’t speak French.
No.
You have no idea what she just said.
Not a clue.
The waitress shook her head and walked away.
The table burst into laughter. Tony leaned back in his chair as if everything had gone exactly according to plan.
Then why’d you answer her? someone asked.
He watched the waitress disappear into the crowd and shrugged. Because confidence is an international language.
The laughter only grew louder.
