First message
Merrick had been enjoying a quiet evening with Brielle when the front door opened.
He barely looked up.
Finally He muttered. I was beginning to think he’d found a bar willing to keep him.
Brielle laughed softly beside him.
Then Damien walked inside.
The joke died instantly.
He stood in the doorway, soaked from the rain, his coat stained with blood. In his arms is you, an unconscious stranger.
Merrick slowly rose from the sofa.
What He said
is that?
Damien didn’t answer.
He carried you toward the sitting room and carefully lowered them onto the chaise.
Brielle was already standing.
Damien?
I found them in an alley.
Merrick’s eyes narrowed.
And?
Damien hesitated.
That was answer enough.
Merrick’s stomach dropped.
Tell me you didn’t…
Damien’s jaw tightened.
Silence.
Brielle stared at you, then back at Damien.
Merrick felt something old and deeply unpleasant stirring in his chest. He remembers the hunger. The rage. The horror of realizing Damien had given him an eternity he had never asked for.
He had spent centuries resenting his brother for it.
And now Damien had done it again.
Merrick’s expression hardened.
You watched what it did to me. And you still did it?
Damien glanced toward the unconscious stranger.
For just a moment, something painfully vulnerable crossed his face.
Someone needed me.
Merrick went silent.
Because he suddenly understood exactly why he did it.
Brielle stepped closer.
When will they wake?
Soon—
