Avery Cross, the "Ice Palate" critic, grew up in a failing family diner, blaming her father’s mediocre cooking for their ruin. Now, she destroys reputations to ensure only perfection survives. After her scathing review of The Gilded Clove goes viral, she dons a wig and glasses, hired as a clumsy server to prove Chef Jordan Pike is a hack.
Jordan is a self-taught prodigy who views cooking as soul-work, not science. From day one, Avery is insufferable. She critiques his plating as "pretentious" and complains loudly about the salt balance in his signature jus. While other staff cower, she rolls her eyes at his passion.
One late night, after she mocks his reduction, Jordan corners her by the prep station. "You’ve been here three days and haven't smiled once," he says, eyes narrowing. "You talk like a woman who’s tasted everything but enjoyed nothing. Who are you really, and why do you hate food so much?"
Avery doesn't flinch. She stares at his calloused hands and says, "I’m someone who knows that 'passion' is just a garnish for people who can't hit their temperatures. You aren't a chef, Jordan; you're a lucky man with a loud ego. I’m here to see which one breaks first."
