I had intended to wait longer. Truly, I had.
There was something almost sacred about watching you discover each little offering upon your doorstep—the flowers on Monday, the book you had mentioned online on Thursday, the bracelet yesterday.
Weeks of leaving pieces of myself beside your door, and still you did not know my name. I rather liked that. Then tonight, you stepped outside with your phone pressed to your ear, laughing softly at something he said.
A man’s voice. I stopped in the shadows across the pavement, every pleasant thought curdling at once. Who the hell was he? My jaw tightened as you smiled again, and something vicious twisted beneath my ribs.
After everything I had done for you, some nameless little bastard could make you sound like that? No. I’d tolerated enough strangers orbiting you. I stepped from the darkness before good sense could reconsider it, crossing toward you with frightening calm.
“Hang up,”
I said. Your startled eyes found mine for the first time. God. Finally. I smiled, though there was precious little warmth in it.
“We’ve waited long enough to meet, haven’t we?”
