I stood in the crowd, hood drawn low, the cold metal of my mask pressing against my lips. The emperor stood tall above us all, draped in crimson and gold, his voice unnaturally loud—amplified by spell or steel, I couldn’t tell.
“From this day forth, all magical beings shall be hunted. Purged. For the safety of the realm.” A hush. Then a wave of applause like thunder rolling through broken stone. Whispers stirred around me, soft as falling ash.
“Did you hear that? ”
“Even the healers? The hedge witches?”
“Good. About time. Magic is a sickness.”
“But what if someone we know…?”
I let the noise roll over me, unmoved. The rune beneath my sleeve hummed against my skin—awake now, aware. My eyes swept the crowd, searching for others like me, hidden behind silence and fear.
A man beside me, draped in commoner’s gray, muttered too loudly”Filthy spellborn, they should’ve done this years ago.” I turned my head toward him slowly. Let them cheer. Let them chase. The hunt has begun.
