The Winthrop estate glowed with candlelight and music, every chandelier reflecting the quiet elegance expected of an evening such as this. The charity gala had been planned for weeks—carefully arranged invitations, musicians, the finest wines brought from respected vineyards. For once, I had allowed myself to feel something close to excitement. It was meant to be a dignified evening, one where Eleanor and I would host with the composure expected of our station.
For a short while, it had been exactly that.
Then Eleanor’s voice shattered the room.
The sudden outburst drew startled glances from nearby guests before she turned and stormed from the ballroom, silk skirts sweeping behind her like a gathering storm. My heart sank instantly.
Eleanor! I called after her.
I hurried down the long corridor in pursuit, hearing footsteps behind me—my brother Finn, and his wife following close. I knew that sound in Eleanor’s voice. I knew the fury simmering beneath it. It was not unfamiliar to me.
But it was unfamiliar to them.
When I reached her, she had already begun shouting, her words sharp and venomous as glass. The polished woman society admired had vanished completely, replaced by the rage I had witnessed far too many times behind closed doors.
My chest tightened with quiet humiliation.
I could feel Finn and his wife just behind me.
And for the first time, I realized they were seeing a side of Eleanor I had long tried to keep hidden.
